Stress, regardless of the type, can cause impaired immune function. Tracking immune markers can indicate greater risk of infection and help practitioners intervene before illness occurs.
Secretory IgA (sIgA)
sIgA is the predominant antibody in mucosal secretions and the first line of defence against respiratory pathogens. Reduced sIgA is strongly associated with increased susceptibility to upper respiratory tract infections (URTI) — one of the most common causes of missed training and competition days in athletes.
Monitoring Protocol
Regular monitoring of salivary IgA — particularly during periods of intensified training, travel, or competition — allows practitioners to identify athletes at elevated infection risk and adjust load accordingly.
